Backup Laviano Steps In for Nova

LINCOLN, Neb. – Chris Laviano made his true debut as a Rutgers quarterback Saturday in the 42-24 loss to Nebraska. The red-shirt freshman from New York entered at halftime following the injury to Gary Nova, and led two second-half scoring drives for the Scarlet Knights.

It was a nightmare scenario for Rutgers when starting quarterback Gary Nova went down, but backup Chris Laviano was ready.

Laviano, who entered Saturday with only two drives worth of experience, held his own at quarterback in replacing a four-year starter. Laviano led three scoring drives against No. 16 Nebraska, although the game was already out of hand at the time.

Laviano finished with four completions on seven passing attempts with his most memorable play coming on a 46-yard bootleg scramble. The freshman from Long Island broke it down in the locker room, and said he will be ready if coach Kyle Flood calls for No. 5 against Wisconsin.

“Every week is the same pretty much – backup or starter,” Laviano said. “Make the most of your reps in practice, watch film and be ready when your number is called.”
