PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Gary Nova is still out after a knee injury suffered Saturday, and red-shirt freshman Chris Laviano feels ready to step forward as his replacement. Laviano led three scoring drives in his second half against Nebraska, and took charge of the first-team offense Sunday as Wisconsin preparation begins.
Chris Laviano took his final snap for Hicksville (N.Y.) Holy Trinity High nearly two years ago. The red-shirt freshman Rutgers quarterback is now in position for a return as a starter.
Senior captain Gary Nova is down with a knee injury -- questionable on the official injury report -- and Laviano is on his second day as the first-team quarterback.
Preparing as the starter is not new to Laviano, who spoke highly of his confidence to get things done. Laviano played in the second half of games against Howard, Ohio State and Nebraska. He has yet to commit a turnover or throw a touchdown.
