Rutgers is Seventh Offer for Jones

Rutgers interest returned to the Rochester area when the staff offered 2016 LB/DE Jamir Jones of Rochester (N.Y.) Aquinas Institute. Jones, who knows the recruiting game, well, discussed his seventh verbal offer with Scout.

Rochester (N.Y.) 2016 LB/DE Jamir Jones has multiple ties to Rutgers, and his first Big Ten offer was cause for excitement this week when he received the news from his head coach.

Jones’ older brother, Jarron Jones, was a Rutgers recruiting target before he eventually signed with Notre Dame.

“I’ve been down to Rutgers a few times, and I liked it,” Jamir Jones said. “The last time was when my brother went there on a visit. I liked it a lot when I was there. I didn’t pay a ton of attention, but I remember thinking it was one of my favorites.”

Jones comes from the Rochester area, where Rutgers signed prospects in three of the last four classes – Quentin Gause, Devan Carter and Jacquis Webb.

“Quentin comes back a lot, and I work out at the same gym as him,” Jones said. “He talks a lot about Rutgers and how much of a family they are. We talk about it, but not much more than that.”

Jones’ older brother chose Notre Dame over more than 20 scholarship offers.

“He’s told me basically to just keep working hard and explore all of my options,” Jones said. “I have to keep my grades up, and that’s probably the most important thing I can be doing right now. The academics are important because one day football isn’t going to be there. You need to get a degree.”

Rutgers became the seventh verbal offer for the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Jones. His other offers include Syracuse, Boston College and Connecticut.

“It’s definitely a blessing but I’ve been working hard at this,” Jones said. “I’m going to keep working to get attention from a lot of schools. I’m going to be taking a lot of visits this winter and in the spring once basketball is down.”
