Smith Recaps Recent Junior Days

After Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic produced receiver Freddie Simmons in 2015, Joe Jay Smith is next in line at the position. Smith recently visited Rutgers and Wake Forest. He spoke with Scout about the latest in his recruitment.

Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic receiver Joe Jay Smith holds three verbal scholarship offers and most recently visited Rutgers for a weekend junior day.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver let campus last week with a solid impression and plans to return this summer.

“I was definitely impressed with Rutgers during my visit,” Smith said. “What stood out is that they’re a real family. They talk about supporting their players and how they all work together.”

Smith did not receive a Rutgers offer, but the staff asked him to return for its one-day skills camp in June.

“They want to see me and see how I work with their coaches,” Smith said. “They want to see if I’m coachable and how I would fit.”

Smith visited Rutgers with his stepfather.

“He really liked it because he’s been a Rutgers fan for his whole life,” Smith said. “He liked the academic stuff too.”

Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Ohio also have offers out to Smith, who visited the Demon Deacons for a junior day as well.

“It was different than a lot of other places I’ve seen,” Smith said. “I definitely liked it. I get along with their coaches very well.”

Smith hopes to decide before the start of his senior season and could visit both Michigan State and Maryland this spring.
