Reading (Pa.) receiver Dontae Owens earned his place in the Rutgers class of 2015 at last year’s skills camp. As the first of two Rutgers skills camps kicks off tonight, Owens sits two weeks away from the start of his college football career.
Owens committed to Rutgers during last year’s camp season with fond memories of last summer.
“That camp was a dream come true for me,” Owens said. “I didn’t know I would be able to receive a Division I scholarship. I did really well, and it was amazing to get this opportunity from Rutgers.”
Owens considers himself a prize fighter, and cannot wait to learn under the wings of preseason All-American Leonte Carroo.
“I feel like I’m going to look up to him more than anyone else,” Owens said. “He’s one of the best in the sport. He’s the one to imitate. He’s the one I’m going to work my way to becoming.
“I spoke to some of the receivers, and they just told me to do what I normally do. They told me to be myself and just make sure I’m working hard. Just play football.”
Owens will be undecided during his first year of academic study with multiple fields of interest.
“I’m definitely going to start off undecided,” Owens said. “Academics are really important. I want to make the right choice because you have to get your education.”
