Whatever happens off the field for junior Nadir Barnwell, the cornerback has a full sumer workload on the field in the upcoming training camp.
Expected to be academically ineligible for the season, Barnwell will be available for training camp regardless of the final word on his academic situation. Head coach Kyle Flood remains hopeful as summer school continues.
“We won’t know really until the end of summer school,” Flood said. “… Regardless of the situation, he’ll be able to practice.”
Also at defensive back, Rutgers awaits the completion of summer courses for incoming freshman Najee Clayton before he enrolls in the program. Flood said the situation was similar to Kevin Wilkins last year, who joined the program for the second week of training camp.
Flood confirmed offensive lineman Logan Lister’s transfer out of the program. The former Kady (Texas) star is the seventh departure from Flood’s 2014 recruiting class.
“All I want Kaiwan Lewis to do is come here and be a great teammate and work every day to be a better football player,” Flood said. “Ultimately where that puts him on the depth chart, we’ll figure all that out as we get into training camp.”
Junior college transfer Isaiah Johnson begins camp as the starting middle linebacker after he played well in spring.
“Isaiah Johnson, I think, did a nice job in the spring learning the system, fitting in in terms of how we play and the swarm that we play with on defense,” Flood said. “That was exciting to see. Just like everybody else in the program, I’m curious to see what he’s done between the end and training camp. Kaiwan’s played a little bit more football, so he’ll bring a little bit more experience to the team.”
Outside of Lewis, Clayton and junior-college-bound Sidney Gopre, the 2015 recruiting class is fully enrolled, Flood said.
