Center Battle Key in Rutgers Training Camp

CHICAGO -- Rutgers coach Kyle Flood has to do a lot more than find a new quarterback in training camp. Flood spoke about many of those goals, including the need for a new starting center, during a morning session with reporters at Big Ten Media Day.

Finding its next quarterback is essential in the early days of Rutgers training camp, but someone has to get either Chris Laviano or Hayden Rettig the football.

As much as Rutgers misses Gary Nova, three-year starting center Betim Bujari’s absence is equally significant. Head coach Kyle Flood wants his next starting center on the same timeframe as his next quarterback – 10 days into training camp.

“I think Derrick Nelson has done a good job,” said Flood, who tried four different players at center during spring practice. “The center position is not that far behind the quarterback position because that guy’s going to have his hand on the ball every snap of the game, and you better have more than one.

Starting right guard Chris Muller remains an option at center in his summer return from injury.

“I’m excited that Chris Muller has learned how to play that position for us,” Flood said. “If he ultimately becomes the starter at center, I’d be very comfortable with him doing that. That will be an important decision we’ll make during training camp, as well.”
