Sophomores Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig face their decisive moment in training camp. The ongoing Rutgers quarterback battle reaches its conclusion in less than two weeks, and both see themselves as the heir to Gary Nova's vacated throne.
"You have to think that way,” Laviano. “I’m trying to prepare for the season. I’ve been working really hard throughout the summer with all the guys. I’m expecting to go into this season being the guy.”
Laviano started the spring game and received more first-team work during the previous camp.
Rettig said Sunday that he dusted off the rust in spring and feels more like himself.
"I just felt like I was still learning everything,” Rettig said. “I guess you could say that [I was rusty], but I’m not going to say my spring was bad. I learned a lot. I’ve just got to keep getting better.”
