Rutgers C Nelson Ready for Battle

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- After Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood praised Derrick Nelson as the potential starting center at Big Ten Media Day, Scarlet Report caught up with the junior. Nelson spoke about the battle with Chris Muller and the key to his first starting job.

It comes down to confidence and communication for Derrick Nelson in his bid for the vacant center position at Rutgers.

Nelson started most of spring as the center, but faces more competition from classmate Chris Muller before he can emerge as the true starter.

"Chris Muller is a great guy," Nelson said. "I think he's a great player and I just hope to have that position at the end of training camp. Whomever is more deserving will get it. I'm just hoping it's me."

Nelson worked through the offensive coordinator change in spring, and improved his communication skills.

"I'm confident enough to make those calls and get it going," Nelson said.
