Rutgers Training Camp Report: Practice 8

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The quarterback battle may not end on time, and Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood said that is a good thing. He spoke in depth about the position and other changes for week two of camp.

The Headline -- Seven to 10 days may not have been enough time for the quarterbacks when it comes to a decisive training camp winner. Now on day eight of training camp, Flood said it could be “a couple of days away” before a decision between Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig.

I think we’ve got a really close race at quarterback and that’s exciting to me,” Flood said. “To see both guys out there make a significant amount of plays in the scrimmage, that was really good. I think we’re probably still a couple of days away.

Rettig outplayed Laviano statistically in the first scrimmage. Laviano, however, went into training camp as the leader and picked up more work because of it. Rutgers may not have a starter by Saturday’s scrimmage.

“It may get made before that,” Flood said. “If it gets made before that then it won’t impact the decision because we’re moving forward at that point. If we haven’t then [the scrimmage] certainly will weigh very heavily.”

Worth Noting -- Flood closed the final 30 minutes of today’s practice for “family business.”

Quote of the Day -- “[Kyle Federico] was hot today. He was four-for-four and his last kick was a 50-yarder. He got the team [chicken] wings tonight. They didn’t seem very fired up about ice cream so I went with the wings.” – Flood.

Around the Big Ten -- When Rutgers travels to Camp Randall, it faces Wisconsin and quarterback Joel Stave, who flew under the radar early in training camp. For more information, click here.
