E.J. Barthel may be new when it comes to the recruiting coordinator role, but relationships in New Jersey go back more than a decade as a high school coach, trainer and former Rutgers football player./
Barthel returned to Rutgers for a player development role. Coach Kyle Flood promoted him in the offseason after he moved Phil Galiano back into a coaching role.
"It's fantastic to be back," Barthel said at Rutgers media day. "It's always been a dream of mine since I've been here in 2003 to come back and be a part of this program."
The role of recruiting coordinator is a challenging one, and centers around organization and personality.
Barthel's role includes tracking which coaches go where and when on the road. Unable to go on the road himself, Barthel saves most his interaction with recruits to on-campus visits. his message echoes Flood's.
"We try to stay away from the hype and the politics of recruiting," Barthel said. "We try to find out who can do what we want them to do. That's kind of the goal here. We've done a great job of evaluating players that we think can do a great job for us. The key to that is going to get them."
