The Headline -- Saturday’s Rutgers football scrimmage could be the deciding factor in a battle at quarterback between Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig. Kyle Flood plans even opportunities for the pair in Saturday’s scrimmage with no decision coming before kickoff.
“We will not make a decision before the second scrimmage,” Flood said. “… To me, every time you come out here with a football it’s important. The scrimmages are more important because it’s more game like.”
Laviano and Rettig received even opportunities with the first team during practices this week, which was not the case during the start of training camp.
“Just trying to give each guy enough that the other players around them can be comfortable in the huddle,” Flood said. “The cadence doesn’t change but the rhythm of the cadence always changes with a new quarterback. … I try to give both of those guys enough opportunities to work with everybody.”
Worth Noting -- Though Kaiwan Lewis leads in the middle linebacker battle, the starter is not yet decided and the battle became closer based on Friday morning’s work.
Scarlet Report Standout -- Junior middle linebacker Isaiah Johnson – It’s hard for a linebacker to shine in a 7-on-7 practice, but Johnson definitely rose to the occasion Friday morning during practice. Johnson showed aggression and awareness on his way to an impressive performance on the field turf.
Quote of the Day -- “I do [miss running back] because it’s the position I’ve played since I was in third grade. It’s my dad’s position. But I’m happy where I am.” – walk-on safety Andre Hunt.
