Rutgers Training Camp Report: Day 17

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Kyle Flood expanded on the latest quarterback developments and welcomed a new player to the roster Wednesday after a morning practice.

The Headline -- Hayden Rettig may be the %%MATCH_8%% starter for Norfolk State but he does not have the job locked down yet. Chris Laviano, suspended for one after rule violations, got plenty of action with the ones during Wednesday’s practice.

Head coach Kyle Flood said that remains the case heading into the season opener.

“We’ve got to make sure that [Rettig] gets enough that he can be effective, but Chris had a great training camp, so he’ll continue to get reps as well.”

The long-term starter at quarterback depends on what both show over the next two weeks.

Worth Noting -- Freshman Najee Clayton is through the clearing house and joined the program early Wednesday. Clayton debuts at practice Thursday, where he begins his Rutgers career at safety.

Scarlet Report Standout -- Junior tight end Nick Arcidiacono – Back in action, Arcidiacono was a first-down machine with plenty of impact plays alongside both quarterbacks during today’s practice.

Quote of the Day -- “Yeah, I’m excited that Najee [Clayton] is here. We’re friends. I played against him in high school and we’re from the same town. He’s going to have a good career.” – Safety Davon Jacobs.

Around the Big Ten -- The battle at running back for Michigan State remains hot with the battle to replace Jeremy Langford. For more information, click here.
