Monday Rutgers Report: Laviano to Start

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Kyle Flood showed firm support for Chris Laviano as his starting quarterback in his Monday press conference to preview Washington State.

The HeadlineChris Laviano is the starting quarterback, and coach Kyle Flood did not leave much room for a Hayden Rettig appearance when he discussed the decision.

“Chris is the starting quarterback and I don’t want any quarterback in our program looking over their shoulder worried about being pulled from the game because they made a mistake,” Flood said. “Right now, Chris is the starting quarterback.”

Laviano completed all four passes Saturday after he returned from suspension at the half, but his work through training camp separated him.

“This process went longer than I expected it to as I said Saturday after the game,” Flood said. “I didn’t anticipate it going this long but what it did do for us is provide a larger body of work with our two scrimmages, an actual game … and all of those things factor in.”

Worth Noting  -- Recruited as a tight end, true freshman Anthony Folkerts replaces Razohnn Gross as the backup fullback after he debuted Saturday in the win over Norfolk State.

Quote of the Day – “I tell all of the younger guys, I’ve told Jawuan Harris, Dontae Owens, Rashad Blunt, if they don’t break my record, I’ll be disappointed in them.” – Receiver Leonte Carroo

Around the Big Ten – Not only did Penn State suffer 10 sacks on quarterback Christian Hackenberg, but talented linebacker Nyeem Whartman-White is now out for the season. For more on the story, click here.
