Rutgers QB Chris Laviano Silently Improving as First-Year Starter

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Although 2-3 as the Rutgers starter, sophomore Chris Laviano put together a solid first half of the season as the Scarlet Knights' leader. Laviano spoke with reporters Monday about his first five starts and impressive statistical performance.

There will be plenty of conversation about Ohio State quarterbacks J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones when the nation's No. 1 team visits Rutgers, but neither one enters kickoff as the best statistical passer on the field.

Scarlet Knight sophomore Chris Laviano has the highest quarterback rating of the three (156.1), more touchdowns (12) and fewer interceptions (six) than the other two combined. Laviano sits at 1,388 passing yards and completed 69 percent of his passes in the first half otf the season. He leds the Big Ten in completition percentage and quarterback efficiency.

"I think he's making progress," said Rutgers coach Kyle Flood. "He's making progress every week. We've seen that. Sometimes the progress is more visible to the naked eye or to the public than others. But we really have seen progress and we're pleased with how he's working.

Laviano threw for a career-high 386 yards against Indiana in a masterful come-from behind victory.

"We have a lot of momentum right now," Laviano said. "Hopefully that will lead to a good week in practice. It's too early to tell though."
