Thursday Rutgers Report: Getting Healthy?

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Kyle Flood discussed the latest on the injury front heading into the Army game. Rutgers has many key players with uncertain statuses for kickoff including linebacker Steve Longa, safety Anthony Cioffi and left guard Dorian Miller.

The Headline – Coach Kyle Flood said an updated injury report comes Friday, and it will be a deciding factor when it comes to offensive line injuries.

Center Derrick Nelson and left guard Dorian Miller are both questionable and missed practice time during the week after injuries against Nebraska.

“We’re getting closer,” Flood said. “I still want to hear from Dave McCune and the medical staff on the availability of some of the guys.”

Flood is not afraid of playing someone that did not practice during the week, and that is a possibility for Army.

“It depends on who it is,” Flood said. “It depends on how much they’ve played.”

Veteran Chris Muller moved to center this week with red-shirt freshmen Zack Heeman, Tariq Cole and Marcus Applefield in competition for both vacant guard spots.

Worth Noting – Flood addressed last year’s leading rusher, Desmon Peoples, during his brief Thursday session when asked if he knew early on that it would be an injury that kept him out for the season.

“I think when the season started, we had a pretty good idea that was going to be the situation,” Flood said.

Quote of the Day – “I think I came a long way. I keep coming in, getting extra work in with the veterans, trying to improve my game each and every way. I’m just doing what’s asked of me by the coaches. … I trust in my game. I trust in the coaching I get, so I’m not really surprised by it.” – Freshman linebacker Deonte Roberts on early playing time.
