Rutgers coach Chris Ash has his defensive coordinator in Jay Niemann of Northern Illinois. Niemann joins the nearly-complete Rutgers staff after his NIU defense gave up 27.6 points and 418 yards per game this season. His defense held Ohio State to 20 points in a 20-13 loss in September.
"Jay will be a great addition to our coaching staff as defensive coordinator,” Ash said in a statement. “Jay and I have known each other for over 20 years and I have always admired his approach to coaching. Jay and I share a defensive philosophy. It will be a defense built on effort, fundamentals, execution and toughness.”
Niemann brings five years of head-coaching experience at Simpson College to go along with nine total years as a defensive play caller. He coached defensive backs and called plays for Northern Illinois for the past five seasons.
Niemann also brings experience as a linebackers coach, where a vacancy remains on the defensive staff for Ash. He joins defensive backs coach Bill Busch and assistant defensive backs coach Aaron Henry on the defensive side of the ball.
