Scouting Rutgers

It seems every year the Scarlet Knights start from scratch, if not worse. On occasion this team offers a draft pick like tight end LJ Smith, the second round choice of the Eagles, whose been the best in a while. There is no prospect of that caliber in '04 yet several defenders are getting attention

Raheem Orr has had a rocky college career yet finally moved into the starting line-up last season and was the best defensive lineman on the team. An explosive, athletic pass rusher, Orr turns the corner with speed and pursues the action laterally. Though not bad against the run, he is a bit small and may be a situational lineman/special teams player at the next level.

Both cornerbacks will be watched by league scouts. Nate Jones has a compact build and is a physical, aggressive corner with an appetite for contact. He may be best as a nickel back at the next level and will make his money on special teams, where Jones stands out in the Big East.

Brandon Haw has nice corner size and skill. The team's best cover man, Haw is constantly around the pass making positive plays and could sneak into the late rounds next year.

Brian Bender is a consistent linebacker that could back-up in a three-four alignment at the next level.
