Cumming (Ga.) South Forsyth place kicker Alex Barbir became one of the hottest recruiting commodities after the Rutgers commit added offers from Penn State and Louisville in the last week.
After a weekend official visit to Rutgers, Barbir plans to have a final decision between the Scarlet Knights and Penn State within the next 48 hours. Barbir has an open weekend on Jan. 29 and the decision to visit Penn State or not will be made soon.
“I don’t have a decision yet but probably in the next day I’ll have a decision on that and put it out on social media,” Barbir said.
Rutgers coach Chris Ash and his staff made a strong pitch to retain his services this weekend. The Scarlet Knights hosted Barbir and his parents on an official visit that included a lot of food and in-depth time inside the program.
“I know [my parents] felt comfortable with me being away from home at Rutgers,” he said. “They felt that the coaching staff would be a good example for me outside of football as a person.”
Ash has an in-home visit still available with Barbir, who twice hosted special teams coordinator Vince Okruch since the coaching changes.
“I really liked the coaches a lot,” Barbir said. “They were down to earth. They weren’t trying to sell me too much. They were honest with who they are and what they stand for. They have great leadership on the coaching staff.”
Barbir enjoyed time with his host – junior long snapper Alan Lucy from Dinwiddie, Va. – and casual time with the coaching staff.
“I would say I enjoyed being able to hang out for lunch yesterday and relax with the coaches and talk with them, play basketball with the coaches, it was a really good bonding moment,” Barbir said. “… I enjoyed my time with [Lucy]. He shared his opinion on different things, the new coaching staff coming in, what it’s like at Rutgers overall as a school with classes and football.”
