Rutgers Wrestling Stays Hot at Home with 30-3 Victory over Maryland

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A dominating home season for Rutgers wrestling continued with a 30-3 victory Friday over Maryland. Rutgers is undefeated at home in 2016, including an upset over No. 4 Nebraska and the first Big Ten shutout in school history against Michigan State.

Rutgers wrestling went into cruise control early against Maryland and finished at the RAC with a 30-3 bounce-back victory.

Sean McCabe got Rutgers off to a hot start with a decision victory at 125 and an exciting overtime victory for heavyweight Billy Smith closed out a dominant performance.

“Billy’s been in some big matches like that, quite a bit actually,” said coach Scott Goodale. “We’re kind of used to it. … I felt good about it going into overtime. He’s in great shape, solid position. I knew it would get loud.”

The 12th ranked Scarlet Knights (12-3, 3-2) returned to form after a road loss to Minnesota before the snowstorm postponed the Wisconsin matchup. Rutgers returns to action Sunday at Princeton and improves to 3-0 at home in conference matches.

“Wrestling at the RAC for me is just a totally different experience,” said junior Richie Lewis. “I know coming out here I’ve got the whole fan base behind me and I don’t ever intend on losing here.”
