Piqua (Ohio) athlete Darien Tipps-Clemons picked up his first Big Ten offer Saturday during an unofficial visit to Rutgers and he will be back to campus soon.
Tipps-Clemons came to Rutgers with two MAC offers, and looks forward to an upcoming Big Ten camp at Rutgers after coach Chris Ash offered him.
“It’s my first Big Ten offer and I’m really excited about that,” Tipps-Clemons said. “It’s pretty cool that Rutgers wants me as my first Big Ten school. I could feel the energy when I walked in. The whole staff was on the same page. It was cool how they were all like that and it’s a good program.”
Tipps-Clemons spoke highly of Ash in their meeting.
“He’s really confident in the way he’s going to run his program at Rutgers,” he said. “… Now they have the coach, they have the foundation. Everybody on staff is on board. He’s fired up about it and everyone else is fired up. He’s going to bring that discipline.”
The coaching staff told Tipps-Clemons that they liked him as an athlete and would not have a decision on linebacker or running back until he returns for camp.
“They offered me and are recruiting me as an athlete,” he said. “They want me to come to camp in June to get evaluated. I spoke with [running backs coach Zak Kuhr] and he was pretty cool. I like that he likes to have fun but he knows when to get serious. I feel like that’s good being in college. I’m going to be with my coach for a long time and you need somebody to keep you mentally [focused].”
