Pat Hobbs Discusses Commitment to Steve Pikiell, Rutgers Basketball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Known as a leader with a basketball background, Rutgers athletic director hired his first coach on the hardcourt Tuesday in Stony Brook's Steve Pikiell. Hobbs spoke after the formal introduction ceremony about the commitment to Pikiell and what set him apart from other candidates.

Pat Hobbs wants to bring Rutgers athletics to the next level, and it starts with stronger financial investments.

After Hobbs signed Steve Pikiell to a five-year deal worth $8 million and increased the pool for paying basketball assistants, he discussed the investment Tuesday afternoon.

"He needs to put together a great staff," Hobbs said. "As he said, a staff is really important and some of the folks that he's talking to are really exciting names and very familiar in terms of recruiting here in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area, so I wanted to make sure he had the resources he needed to be successful."
