Saturday Practice Report: OC Drew Mehringer Speaks

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers brought a high tempo to practice Saturday where all eyes fell upon the quarterbacks and new offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. Mehringer and the trio of quarterbacks working with the ones spoke with the media after practice.

The Headline – Rutgers has three quarterbacks even in reps with the first team in practice, and plans for a wide open battle at the position under coach Chris Ash.

Chris Laviano, Hayden Rettig and Giovanni Rescigno split work through the first two practices but everyone down to walk-on Jack Clements will get a look.

“Keeping track of the number of reps in my head is probably the biggest deal,” Mehringer said. “You don’t want to be unfair to anyone, not because you’re playing favorites, but because you forget. You’re thinking about different things and making sure we have the right people in the right formation.”

Mehringer echoed Ash’s thoughts on a timeframe for a decision at quarterback.

“If one guy clearly rises up above all the others, certainly there could be one named,” Mehringer said. “Am I saying that there’s going to be one named? No, not right now. We’ll see. I don’t know what their progression is going to look like just yet.”

Worth Noting – Justin Goodwin continues to evolve as a receiver with more opportunities this spring.

“He’s running his routes out of the backfield, really, and his work ethic is unbelievable,” Rettig said. “He’s always asking questions. He really helps the team. You want to look up to that guy.”

Quote of the Day – “It’s always good to throw with him, seeing how he was an NFL guy … he’s a good guy,” – Rettig on workouts with former Rutgers receiver Tiquan Underwood.
