Rutgers MLB Brandon Russell Pushes for Time to Shine

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Football does not need to be over complicated, and an offseason transition for linebacker Brandon Russell has him relaxed and in line for a major role for the 2016 Rutgers defense.

On what Brandon Russell likes about the new Rutgers defense...

"I feel I am just able to play football. It's not as much thinking involved. You have to know your assignment, but at the end of the day, you're just playing ball."

On a typical practice day...

"We don't really have any specific amount of reps. We're just getting thrown in where they feel fits and just competing every single snap. ... I definitely like the new blitzes involved, so far. Today was one of the first days we installed something but I'm looking forward to what's to come."

On comfort at middle linebacker...

"I've always had somewhat of a liking for MIKE more than other positions. I feel like the coaches have put me in a position that they feel is best for me to succeed."

On lack of early playing time...

"Not going to lie, it was a little rough. Of course a young player comes in and he's always eager to play. Everybody has to wait their turn. It just wasn't my time. I feel like if I would have gotten put in a situation early, I probably wouldn't have handled it the best."
