Thursday Practice Report: Laviano Steps Up at Quarterback

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Chris Ash met the media for the first time since Saturday's scrimmage and spoke in detail about why Chris Laviano has an edge in the ongoing quarterback competition.

The Headline –  The reps at quarterback are even, but not for long said head coach Chris Ash. Chris Laviano has an edge in the playbook at the midway point in practice, and the reward will be more work during Saturday’s second scrimmage.

“Chris probably played the best of all three quarterbacks in that scrimmage last Saturday,” Ash said. “We’re heading into the scrimmage this Saturday and they’re all three going to get reps with the ones and the twos. Chris has probably earned up through seven practices the right to get a few more reps than the other guys and that will be reflected in the scrimmage.”

The quarterback race is far from concluded, but 2015’s starter built up a strong start after the first scrimmage.

“He hasn’t separated himself but he’s probably had a few more productive days as we’ve gone through seven practices,” Ash said. “He’s had good days, bad days. All of them have had good days, bad days. He’s probably had more good days than some of the other guys so he’s probably getting a few more reps right now.”

Worth Noting – Senior offensive lineman Chris Muller was off crutches and had no protective gear while at today’s practice. The projected right guard starter did not participate in drills but worked instead on the cardio bikes and in rehab work with the training staff.

Quote of the Day – “I tell the team all the time, we can go fast, we can have great intensity, we can play extremely hard, which we are for the most part, but if we don’t have the proper execution, we have really nothing.” -- Ash
