Sophomore QB Giovanni Rescigno Runs Down Spring QB Battle at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Sophomore Giovanni Rescigno worked with the twos and threes during the spring game in what coach Chris Ash calls an open competition for the starting quarterback job in 2016. Rescigno addressed work ethic and personal advantages in the battle with juniors Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig.

Quarterback Giovanni Rescigno on what he got out of spring football...

"It was really fun. I think I rounded off spring ball really well. I think guys worked hard. We went out and enjoyed ourselves. It was a good time. ... [I got] experience, in general, working a lot of reps. Not just tonight but throughout the whole spring, there were a lot of things I worked on, I wanted to work on and progress. I think tonight was just going back to that stuff and seeing it again and moving forward from it."

What he needs to improve...

"I'm having my eyes in the right place in certain things that we do in the offense. With the defense, just certain situations and what they're going to do and predicting it. That's what I have to work on more, putting my eyes in the right place in certain plays. ... Pre-snap stuff, pre-snap reads and post-snap reads in what the defense is doing. I'm getting better."

How to improve...

"Watch film and when you get reps, you just need to put your eyes in the right spot. Once you put your eyes in the right spot, you kind of know at that point."

Summer plans...

"The way I go into the summer is just, I'm going to work hard every day. I need to watch more film, just little things I can do to have a competitive edge and keep on working harder each day. Just because spring ball is over doesn't mean we can stop working and doing certain things with film and throwing and stuff like that. It's going to be a lot of hard work over the summer."

On an open competition...

"I want a chance to compete and a chance to play and get reps so I can take advantage of every rep whether that's mental reps or actual reps on the field. It's definitely something that I need to take advantage of."

Where things stand...

"I go on each day working my hardest. We have a great bond between all of us in the quarterback room. I'm really happy with how everything is going. Just going forward, I want to compete and get better every day. Each rep that I get, take advantage of each rep that I get."

If he fits the offense...

"Absolutely. As spring moved forward, I felt comfortable. I think it went really well. I really do. I felt really good about it. ... It was something similar to what I ran in high school with footwork and being in shotgun all of the time, which is something I'm definitely more comfortable with. ... It's just a different feeling when you're in shotgun than when you're under center. Coming from high school and doing stuff so much in high school, it was nice to have it back in shotgun because it's so much more comfortable for me with how it's set up."
