Football

All right, forget all the recent carnage ... forget the 21 straight Big East defeats (22 if you count UConn, which will not formally join the football league until 2004) ... forget a nightmarish Division 1-AA loss to Villanova, the other losses and the blowouts and the coulda-shouldas. This a new season. With new hope.

PISCATAWAY - When Tres Moses looks around at the all promising talent Rutgers has brought in at wide receiver the past two years, he admits he's genuinely impressed. It's hard not to be, he says.

Rutgers University football coach Greg Schiano didn't fault Sports Illustrated for ranking his team No.‚105 of 117 in its college football preview, which hit newsstands last week.
"They're right," Schiano said. "If you look at the last two years, that's where I'd put us at too. People who don't have an intimate knowledge of what we've got going on over here don't understand that it's about to click. But I don't blame them for putting us there. If you had to bet the odds, that's a pretty smart bet."

Rutgers University football coach Greg Schiano called Jason Nugent into his office back in July. The sophomore entered as a running back but left as a member of the secondary. "I was happy about the decision. I just want to play football," Nugent said.

Depending on who you ask, the race had three different winners. "I won," Rutgers University freshman cornerback Keon Braswell said. "It was close, but I definitely won."

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh will start this college football season in the Top 15 nationally but only No. 3 in the Big East -- an on-the-rise program, but one still chasing Miami and Virginia Tech. Next year, it could be an entirely different ballgame -- one that might find the Panthers emerging as the pre-eminent program in the Big East.

It may not be too great a stretch to say the future of Temple football depends on getting into Lincoln Financial Field.
Negotiations with the Eagles on use of the shiny new takeout food joint on Pattison Avenue are stalled.

Pitt opens training camp tomorrow for what is expected to be its most successful season in more than two decades. The Panthers have 17 starters returning, more depth and talent than they've had since the 1980s and have been buoyed by one of their best recruiting classes.

WVU may have lost a left offensive tackle, but Josh Stewart likely gained significant playing time for this season.

Women's Basketball

Shakira Clarke, a junior from Toronto who graduated high school after three years, will join the Rutgers women's basketball team if she can get by the NCAA and the university's clearinghouses, her AAU coach said yesterday. Ro Russell, director of Grassroots Canada, said he is optimistic that Clarke will be eligible to play this season after recently graduating from a fast-track program.
