Rutgers showed Bel Air (Md.) John Carroll running back Devin Darrington plenty of interest during two spring trips but said it could not offer until spring evaluation.
Once again, Rutgers followed through when a spring evaluation visit from offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer became Darrington's 12th offer.
“He's a great guy, and a great coach, so I was excited,” Darrington said. “He said they wanted to offer, and it feels great. When I've been up there, I saw the great things that they were doing in the program and how great the coaches are. I'm proud to have an offer from Rutgers University.”
Darrington and Mehringer spoke in-depth about the offer later in the day.
“He told me, 'you don't know how dynamic you will make our offense,'” Darrington said. “They said they like my offense and the speed I have to run the ball. I can catch out of the backfield and be dynamic.”
Darrington impressed at an Opening Regional event that helped him exceed double-digit offers. His opportunities now include Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Harvard, Yale and Cornerll.
“I'm taking some visits this summer, but my dad knows the details about that,” he said. “Everybody is that the top right now, to be honest with you. I'm grateful and pleased to have the opportunity to go to college for free and play football.”
Asked about his primary deciding factors, Darrington cited academics, competition and family. He has no time-frame for a decision.
