Checking in with Rutgers 2018 QB Target Shelton Applehite Jr.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic 2018 quarterback recently spoke with Scarlet Report about the recruiting game and the early interest from in-State Rutgers.

Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic 2018 quarterback Shelton Applewhite Jr. on spring competitions...

"I'm really excited. This is the first time I'm doing it [alone]. Most of the time, I'm doing it with my team. Now I'm really excited to show people what I can do."

On being competitive...

"It's exciting. It shows where I stand with other 2018 quarterbacks, and also 2017 quarterbacks. Not just in the region, but the nation."

On relationships with other 2018 quarterbacks...

"I grew up competing with Allan Walters and competing with Artur Sitkowski down in Old Bridge. It's good going at each other [at the Opening]. I'm just looking to compete. That  was really the reason why I came. Compete and show other people what I can do and also better myself."

On Rutgers...

"Rutgers is really good. I see them really improving. I really love the coaches and the family aspects. It's exciting.

On Johnathan Lewis commitment...

"I was really excited about him. We played on the  same Pop Warner team. He was older, but I played on a younger team. To see that inner-city kids, we both can do great things. It's very exciting."

On recent Rutgers visit..

"It was really nice. All of my friends, we were all together talking about the fact that we were all around the coaches and the love we got from them.

On offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer...

"He's shown me a lot of love. He wants me to call every Sunday, and I have to call coach [Bill] Busch every Thursday. He just wants to keep a great relationship. ... All of my family is in Jersey, and I would love for my family to watch me play at Rutgers for college."
