Coach Steve Pikiell Analyzes Offseason Basketball Grind

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- As Rutgers basketball heads into the third live recruiting period of July, the team itself remains on its gym grind with workouts. After a Tuesday afternoon workout with the team, head coach Steve Pikiell spoke with Scarlet Report about the state of the program after 100 days.

The Highlights...

Coach Steve Pikiell on adding Matt BullockCandido Sa and Issa Thiam ...

"They're multi-position guys, which helps us a lot. Candido can play three, four and five. Issa can play the one, two and three and Matt Bullock can play the two, three and four. They're multi-position guys, which is good. When you don't have a lot numbers-wise on the roster, you need guys that can play different positions on your roster and the three of them can shoot the ball. You saw our shooting percentages. We need some help in that area."

On Corey Sanders ...

"Corey is on board. He's in the gym more now. He's been blessed with some unbelievable DNA and he's learning really now how to work and how to be a leader and how to lead with his mouth. It's one of the most important things. When you're a good quarterback, you've got to call audibles. We need him to be a good quarterback. You've got to lead too by example and by mouth. He's getting there. He's one of the youngest guys in the country age wise. ... He's still very young. He's young in his basketball but he's been great. He's just got a lot of talent.

On DeShawn Freeman's Rehabilitation ...

"DeShawn's been great. He was not in great shape at all coming off that injury. If you saw him 90 days ago, he couldn't get through 20 minutes of a workout. He's been really good. He's kind of got a unique game. He's a little unorthodox. He can score around the post. He's a little bit different. We've got to get him in great shape. He's got to become our first double-double guy. He's got to grab 10 rebounds and score 12 or 13 points for us. I think he can be one of those."

On the Recruiting Grind and Final Live Period ...

"We've been on the job 100 days. One hundred days was [Monday]. We are everywhere. We're doing a good job. We're everywhere. We're involved with every kid that we think can help our program. We're here late at night making phone calls. We're involved with some really good players. You won't know the fruits of your labor but I would tell you the three kids we signed are good players, Big Ten players, so we already have three more than we had 100 days ago. I feel really good about that."
