Vance Matthews Soars Up WR Depth Chart in Rutgers Transition to Spread Offense

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Another potential walk-on to starter success story at Rutgers, Vance Matthews is one of the top wide receivers in the rotation after one week of training camp. Matthews went 1-on-1 with Scarlet Report at media day about he flourished early in the spread offense.

Rutgers WR Vance Matthews on the Spread Offense...

I love our new offense. It's definitely something new for everyone here, but I like it. Get receivers more involved. Obviously a spread offense, you're going to be throwing the ball and airing it out more. I can't say I have any problems with it so far.”

On the Path from Walk-on to Starter...

It took a lot of work but I come from a background where you have to work for everything. Nothing is handed to you. I came. I walked on because I wanted to play at a high level. Now we're at the highest level and it didn't deter me. It just made me work harder and get my spot. I have my opportunity now.”

On the First Scrimmage...

First scrimmage, everything is going to look great and look bad at the same time. We'll get to where we need to be by season time. I have trust in coach [Chris] Ash and coach [Drew] Mehringer. They'll get us to where we need to be. We have all of the right guys that are going to put their head down and get to work to where we really need to be by the time Washington comes around.”

On the Quarterback Battle...

It's a great quarterback battle. Those two (Chris Laviano and Zach Allen) and all of the rest of our quarterbacks, they've all been doing a really good job. I love everyone who throws me the ball. It doesn't really matter. I have no preferences. Team wide, we all have competition everywhere. That really helps improve our program as a whole when you have competition between positions. It makes everyone strive to be the best.”

On Competition at Receiver...

We have a lot of competition in our room. Everyone wants to play, even the young guys that just came here. Everyone is trying to play. Everyone is trying to get their playing time and start and everything. I think that really drives all of us. There may not be a whole lot of stats but we all have game experience. We've all been here long enough to know how games go. I think that really drives our room forward.”
