Rutgers Practice Report: Eric Margolis Steps Up at Linebacker

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The latest from Rutgers coach Chris Ash at training camp includes a depth update at right tackle and strides at linebacker for sophomore Eric Margolis.

The Headline – Sophomore Eric Margolis remains a first-team linebacker for Rutgers heading into the second wave of two-a-days and a Saturday scrimmage.

Margolis replaced the injured Trevor Morris as a starter in Saturday's scrimmage. He worked as the starting weakside linebacker again Wednesday.

Margolis missed spring practice for injury reasons and played primarily special teams as a red-shirt freshman. The West Nyack (N.Y.) Clarkstown product was a late addition at linebacker in the class of 2014.

“He's out there grinding,” said coach Chris Ash. “He's working extremely hard. He hadn't played football for a while. He wasn't a part of spring. He was out from the post-season surgery. I really like Eric. He's working extremely hard. We're still trying to find probably what his best position is going to be at linebacker, but he's getting a lot of reps and he's shown a lot of improvement.”

Worth Noting – Safety Kiy Hester and offensive tackle Manny Taylor missed today's practice for injury reasons. True freshman K.J. Gray saw more involvement with the safeties and Jack Shutack remained the second-team left tackle as a result.

Quote of the Day – “They put you in the Iron Sheik hold. … If you're under [weight] you have to get to that weight. You may have to, I don't know. I've never not weighed what they want. I've been too scared. I'm not going to not weight something other than what I'm supposed to be.” – lineman Chris Muller on new nutritional programs.
