Video: 1-on-1 with RB Robert Martin

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Running back Robert Martin missed time midway through training camp but projects as a starter and impact player in the Rutgers offense. He goes 1-on-1 with Scarlet Report about the details of his offseason and the one change you'll notice immediately against Washington.

Rutgers running back Robert Martin on dealing with changes at Rutgers...

“I was prepared in high school. I was pushed hard. That's all I do coming to the facility is just to work hard. Things play out on their own. I'm grateful to have two great coaches. Now I'm just trying to compete every day. That's what we keep being taught since the [Chris] Ash era [started]. Compete no matter what. If it's in the meeting room, the field, academics, you have to compete.”

On the new Rutgers offense...

“I see a lot of playmakers in this offense. We have a great offensive coordinator and a great staff on the offensive side. We're trying to get the ball in everybody's hands and I like that. It's a lot of big plays that are going to be made this season.”

On the differences in tempo...

“I see a fast-paced offense who's trying to go real fast and they're trying to make big plays. That's what I see, and a lot of energy and a lot of players that are in shape.”

On getting in shape...

“We had a good offseason from the winter and in the summer. We conditioned a lot. We also got bigger. They're just preaching hydration every minute of the day. Even walking around they're making sure you've got a water bottle, making sure it's filled up and you're drinking – non-stop drinking at the facility and at practice. Those are keys to not cramping and different injuries like that.”

On offseason improvements...

“I think the biggest thing people notice is how aggressive I am when I'm blocking. That's what I think people are going to see this year. Like I said in this offense, you're going to have to do a lot of things. Catch out of the backfield, blocking and being able to run hard. I want to show that I'm a good blocker as well.”
