Rutgers Practice Report: Latest at Quarterback

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Chris Ash offered the latest take on quarterback and where reps stand between the dueling juniors. Which quarterback brings the edge to Saturday's scrimmage?

The HeadlineChris Laviano has an edge at quarterback going into the second scrimmage of training camp. Laviano received the majority of time with the ones in Friday's pre-scrimmage practice.

Expect the same role in Saturday's scrimmage with a decision needed soon at quarterback.

“It's kind of been that way,” Ash said on quarterback reps. “Right now we have to get better at quarterback still. We have gotten a little bit better but we're not game ready by any means. There's still a lack of consistency at time with quarterbacks but every day they go, they get a little bit better at something

Zach Allen ran the second-team offense Friday, but he will see time with the ones on Saturday.

“Both of them will get reps with the ones,” Ash said. “A lot of it we'll just see how it's going. It will be the flow of it. If one of them is doing better than the other, we'll probably keep going with them.”

Ash wants a quarterback decision shortly after the scrimmage with other key battles at kicker and linebacker.

Worth Noting – Ash singled out wide receiver Dacoven Bailey as a young standout at receiver. With players like Andre Patton, Jay Harris and Carlton Agudosi limited in camp, Bailey put up another solid week.

“Dacoven will probably be a freshman that will play both on offense and on special teams,” Ash said. “He's done a really nice job. He's fast. He's got good speed, one of the faster kids we've got on the football team. [I am] really excited about him and what he's done in the increased reps as we've gone through training camp.”

Quote of the Day – “Hampton, I think, has got a chance to be an absolute star. I've been around some really good safeties in my career. Hampton's got three years to play still. I think he's got a chance to be really good. I'm very excited about him.” – Ash on sophomore safety Saquan Hampton.
