Timber Creek Product Tyreek Williams Earns Early Playing Time at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- True freshman Tyreek Maddox-Williams blocked a punt and played linebacker in his home debut with Rutgers football. Scarlet Report spoke with Williams about his development and a reunion with Timber Creek's Quanzell Lambert and Myles Nash.

Rutgers true freshman linebacker Tyreek Williams on blocked punt...

"It was good. I just went in there and did what I was trained to do. ... I'm super comfortable. They train each and everybody as if they were the starter, so based off my training, I go in there as if I'm a starter and do everything I'm asked to do."

On earning playing time...

"I just show that I know what I'm doing. I show that I'm able to be coachable and I understand everything so [the coaches] can trust me when they put me on the field. I'm just patient with everyone."

On speed translating to his game at linebacker...

"It's helped a lot. Even running down the field as fast as I can, the coaches love speed. It just shows effort, so speed really is helpful. ... When you're fast you're fast, so when I'm pass rushing or when I'm sticking somebody or running down the field on kickoffs, speed is always a factor."

On playing linebacker and special teams against Howard...

"I'm just as comfortable [at linebacker] as anything else. Like I said, they train as if we're the starter, so we know how to do everything."

On relationships with Quanzell Lambert and Myles Nash...

"Quanzell and Myles, they keep me on track. Any time things are hard, they always talk to me so that I can get through it. That's what made me most comfortable about coming here as a freshman based off of guys like that -- leaders. ... Especially with training camp, it was the hardest thing I've ever been through. I needed to talk to them. I needed them to talk to me to keep going and work as hard every day and never give up. If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't go as hard as I want to because I'm so tired but they keep my head up."
