Video: Rutgers RB Coach Zak Kuhr

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers running backs coach Zak Kuhr explains how Robert Martin bounced back in September and who decides the rotation on game days.

Rutgers running backs coach Zak Kuhr on Robert Martin's rebound...

He's had to shake a little bit of rust off but he's getting going. He's still working on finishing in practice and getting his game reps, game speed. It takes time to kind of mold that unit into one line.”

On off the field improvements...

We had a long talk towards the end of training camp and we made a commitment to one another and he made a commitment to himself. He's absolutely doing what he needs to do off the field.”

On Josh Hicks getting reps...

It's just a feel. Josh got hot so Josh stayed in. I want to let the first guy get going. I don't want to just pull him after one series. I want to let him get going a little bit. Rob was doing alright and we needed a change up. Josh went in and did really well and he stayed in.”

On option and read option work with receivers and quarterbacks...

When we motion Janarion [Grant] back in the backfield we'll do some ball-handling stuff with that, work on when he needs to cut up, when he needs to read. It's few but every once in a while we do [work with receivers]. … They're just dynamic athletes. I'll say this, Janarion might have some of the best balance I've seen ever. He's a fun kid to watch. When he goes, he goes. It's fun to watch. … Coach [Drew] Mehringer is pretty much on the [quarterbacks] and I'll drop a tidbit from time to time.”

On consulting with Mehringer on a running back rotation...

It's mainly me and I'll just let Drew know that 'hey I'd like to go with this guy' and he'll OK it or 'hey we might try to do this so let's go with this guy.' It's pretty much me and then his response.”
