1-on-1 with Freshman CB Damon Hayes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Fresh off an impressive debut against Howard, cornerback Damon Hayes goes 1-on-1 with Scarlet Report about his chance to be an impact true freshman for coach Chris Ash and Rutgers.

Rutgers true freshman cornerback Damon Hayes on a bigger role against New Mexico...

"I'm definitely excited to show what I can do, prove to my coaches that they didn't make a mistake. I'm just ready to ball out. I've been working hard this whole offseason. ... I'm just going out and working every day. I'm pushing, studying my playbook more and just getting physically and mentally ready."

On lessons learned in debut against Howard...

"Tempo is way faster than high school, definitely. You've got to bring your A-game every play, no plays off. Other than that, I was prepared for the most part. My coaches coached me hard, so I prepared well. I stepped up."

On if he rewatched his sack against Howard...

"I honestly let it go after that day. It's really nothing. I didn't get the sack, so it's really nothing. I've got to move on, make more plays. I'm just moving on."

On experience against triple option while at Upper Marlboro (Md.) Wise...

"The challenges are the crack-and-go, the fake block and then they'll go and the quarterback will throw for a touchdown. You've got to have great eye discipline. You've got to be disciplined on all cylinders."

On relationship with cornerbacks coach Aaron Henry...

"He's drilling me. He calls me at night all the time just to make sure I'm on my playbook. On those late nights, he's really helping me out a lot. ... He's a player's coach. He's young, so he can relate to us on another level. Instead of always getting in our stuff, he's going to keep it real with us and connect with us on a different level outside of football. We have a relationship outside of football too. I'm eager to learn from him and he just pushes me. He's getting me better  each day."

On hometown reaction to his performance...

"I've gotten a lot [of love]. A lot of people hit me up after that game. It comes with it. I'm taking it with a grain of salt and I just moved on."
