Video: 1-on-1 with Freshman Safety KJ Gray

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- After he expected to red-shirt, K.J. Gray is now a key member of the Rutgers defensive secondary. We spoke 1-on-1 with the former St. Peter's Prep Marauder about the beginning of his career in his first interview since he joined the roster.

True freshman safety K.J. Gray on Rutgers debut...

I feel good, got the first game out of the way. I had to step up. Saquan Hampton got hurt in the first game. I was supposed to red-shirt but I'm ready to take over.”

On a bigger role in the defense against New Mexico...

I'm just trying to get everything down pat. Playing as a true freshman is a big responsibility, and I'm just trying to … earn the trust of the team.”

On transition from star St. Peter's Prep receiver to safety...

It's not really that big of a transition, I've just got to be comfortable. The only adjustment is the atmosphere and stuff like that. I came well prepared.”

On who helps him learn the position and playbook...

I talk to Kiy Hester a lot. I talk to Saquan a lot. They paired me up with Anthony Cioffi as my big brother, so I just stick with those three and just other seniors around the team.”

On playing in front of former St. Peter's Prep teammates...

It's a big honor and it's a great experience to transition from high school to college. To have your little bros that you played with a year ago watch you play college football, it's just amazing.”

On playing special teams...

It's a requirement to play specials in order to play on the field. My comfort level is whatever gets me on the field, I'll do it. I'm comfortable with it.”

On learning from his first college game...

Just get more used to it. It was my first game. I've got it out of the way. I'll just be more prepared. … I was a little nervous, but once that first snap went down, I just felt at home.”
