Practice Facility Groundbreaking is "Game Changer" for Rutgers Coach Steve Pikiell

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Basketball coach Steve Pikiell explains why his message to recruits is to "buy stock now in Rutgers University." Scarlet Report went 1-on-1 with Pikiell during today's historic groundbreaking event.

Rutgers basketball coach Steve Pikiell on his involvement with new practice facility...

"It's been great. I've met with people already, prebuilding. It's just adding my input, and moving forward here, we're going to make great decisions based on what's best for the student athletes. I know Pat Hobbs will do that along with the athletic administration and the university administrators too that are involved. It's going to be a world-class facility. We need it, and it goes toward the commitment of a lot of people coming together to make the lives of student athletes better."

On excitement about the event...

"Any time you have a commitment like this, it's a game changer. I think it's a game changer for our athletic department. It certainly is in the basketball world. The league we play in, all have practice facilities and they've been built and their up and running. We'll have the newest and latest technologies involved in ours. The combination of the healthcare and sports performance and all of that is an unbelievable combination. It just doesn't enhance their basketball performance, it enhances their lives. I think that's a great sign for Rutgers University and our athletic department."

On his recruiting pitch with a new facility plans...

"I'm showing you that this is where this athletic department is going. I talk a lot to student athletes about 'buy stock now in Rutgers University.' It's going to get better. This is just symbolic of where we're headed and the commitment that the university has made to the Big Ten and to our athletic programs. I try to tell recruits all the time, this is a great place to come play. It's the state university of New Jersey. Great people. Great conference. Great academics. And now a world-class facility. It checks off a lot of the boxes for us."
