Rutgers Wrestling is Bigger than the Barn, and Gets the Facility to Match Success in 2019

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- After a historic season in 2015-16, Rutgers wrestling is bigger than the Barn and coach Scott Goodale welcomes an opportunity for an elite practice facility in 2019.

Rutgers wrestling coach Scott Goodale on the significance of a new facility...

It's certainly a big day. It reminds me of that day I found out we were going to be in the Big Ten. There's so much excitement. The possibilities of what can happen here with this new facility, I don't think many people understand the whole recruiting outlook and what this does for recruiting and attracting the best kids. Ultimately in wrestling, you probably don't want a kid just looking for a facility. But the ability to be able to wrestle in a room where you don't have to worry about splitting practices and making sure our guys are safe, that's super important. It's a state of the art facility, so it's just huge for us. We like the Barn. The Barn is our place. But to get out of there, it will be good. We've outgrown it. The type of guy we've brought in, they need this facility.”

On big changes after his 10 years with the program...

It's important. It's big. At least in my program, there hasn't been any type of building or groundbreaking stuff for us and our guys. It's always been the same wrestling room and the same weight room. Overall for our athletic department, it shows an unbelievable commitment by them to get this done and get after it and just show not only recruits but high school coaches and junior high coaches that we're trying to do things bigger and better and just try to do the right things for our student athletes. This goes a long way in doing that.”

On more ammunition for a recruiting pitch...

It's a reality thing. We've always kind of used this, the facility. We're going to have a new facility when we recruited the [Anthony] Ashnaults of the world and the [Tyson] Dipperys of the world. It just never came to fruition. Here we are now. We put a shovel in the ground. We have to go build this thing. We're going to do it. It shows them that we're committed to this program and our athletic department is committed to this program. It's an exciting day. We'll get some of these pics out to our recruits. Listen, here's where we're at. This is what we're doing. We're excited to show them and the parents for sure.”
