After the initial shock, excitement came next for 2018 athlete Lucas Nunez after a conversation with his head coach at Bronx (N.Y.) Cardinal Hayes.
The 2018 playmaker has his first scholarship offer.
“It feels great because I've been looking for a scholarship since last year and it never came,” Nunez said. “I kept working hard, though, and now that I have my first one, it's great.”
The offer came from nearby Rutgers University. Rutgers dipped into Cardinal Hayes in 2017 for receiver Shameen Jones. The Scarlet Knights have two offers in 2018 at the school with Nunez and offensive lineman Qadir White.
“I know about the coaches because of Shameen but I don't know them that well yet,” he said. “I've talked to Shameen about them, though, and he said it's a good school that should be a good look for me.”
Nunez will be at Rutgers for its junior day. He named Syracuse, Connecticut, Buffalo and Massachusetts as the other schools most involved in his recruitment.
After an injury to Jones, Nunez stepped up as the top playmaker for Cardinal Hayes this season. Nunez caught 58 passes for 1,582 yards and 21 touchdowns in a breakout season.
“I play both sides, so I can basically go anywhere and make plays,” Nunez said. “It doesn't matter what side of the ball I'm on, I'm making plays. … I prefer receiver but due to my height, I may have to play corner.”
The 5-foot-8 receiver does expect height to define him at the next level.
“My height doesn't affect me,” he said. “I just play the game that I love and do what I need to do.”
