Finished with a diverse high-school career and all-star game experience, Birmingham (Ala.) Carver athlete Syhiem Simmons has a leader and eyes on two upcoming official visits before a final decision.
Originally from Jersey City, N.J., a return home to Rutgers is the leading option for Simmons before an official visit.
“Everything is good, but I have like I have to take two more visits before I'm ready to make a commitment,” Simmons said. “My heart, right now, is at home but I have to see what ends up happening on my visits.”
Rutgers hosts Simmons on a Jan. 20 official visit.
“Rutgers is on top but it's more than just being my home,” he said. “It's Big Ten football, and they're building something new so they want to bring in kids like me that can play right away.”
Rutgers defensive backs coach Bill Busch is his primary recruiter. Simmons is also friendly with sophomore safety K.J. Gray, who played in Jersey City at St. Peter's Prep.
“I'm willing to play both sides of the but but they probably want me on defense at a strong safety role,” Simmons said. “I like that because I'm the guy that gets stops when we need one. I fly to the ball at full speed.”
West Virginia hosts Simmons Jan. 13 as his other set visit. Simmons also hopes to visit Alabama, but said nothing is set.
“West Virginia is another good option for me,” he said. “I want to take a visit there and see what they're about.”
