Scarlet Report TV: Eugene Omoruyi Continues Growth in Starting Role

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- From Orangeville Prep to Big Ten basketball, Rutgers freshman Eugene Omoruyi analyzes his quick rise in playing time for Steve Pikiell.

Coach Steve Pikiell on Eugene Omoruyi, "I love his toughness. That’s what keeps him in the lineup. He has a chance to be one of our better passers and we’re not a great passing team. He’s a good rebounder. Really, it’s his toughness that has helped our team in a lot of ways."

Eugene Omoruyi comments -- "First of all I'm honored. I just want to keep bringing high intensity to the starting lineup and show people what I want them to see in me. That's like high intensity and hard work."

On new responsibilities -- "[Coach Pikiell] is asking me to look at the basket, and if I have a lane, take it to the basket. I'm a real good free throw shooter so I can get fouled.

On learning of starting role -- "We talked about it, but I was surprised at first. I'm really embracing it right now. ... I was really happy but I didn't want to show it. I just switched the jersey around to red and acted normal. It felt really good."

On transition from Canada -- "Last year when I was in prep school, I was stronger than a lot of guys. This year coming now, a lot of guys are stronger than I am. I'm just finding ways to adapt and finding other ways to score."
