Rutgers Recruiting Trend Meter: Jan. 26 UPDATE

Scarlet Report has the latest information on where Rutgers targets are trending before the final official visit weekend of the 2017 recruiting cycle. With National Signing Day around the corner, how will the class finish off?

Following recruiting is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride, especially in visit season. For experts, handicapping recruitments is a dubious endeavor. Recruiting is incredibly volatile, obviously, since it’s based on the whims of teenagers that have an enormous amount of pressure on them from many different adults.

Predicting where a recruit goes is far too unpredictable. Fans, though, always want to know the latest buzz on each recruit so we thought the best thing to do is put together a latest trend meter, kind of a stock report on whether Rutgers’ and Chris Ash’s chances with the recruit are going up, down or sideways. We’ve talked to various Scout experts, prospects and sources around the country and this is the latest trend for prospects and visit targets for Rutgers. The beauty of this is that as the trend changes we can change that little arrow as we approach National Signing Day. Keep checking back here while we constantly update the trend meter.

On the Defensive Line...

http://www.scout.com/player/207421-tijaun-mason?s=183

It doesn't trend much higher than a commitment, and that is exactly where the situation sites with Memphis (Tenn.) Trezevant three-star defensive end TiJaun Mason. Mason considers himself committed to the Scarlet Knights.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 20

http://www.scout.com/player/208182-boye-mafe?s=183

It was a good job by Rutgers to get Minnetonka (Minn.) Hopkins defensive end Boye Mafe on campus for an official visit, but Minnesota and coach PJ Fleck are still on the schedule. The potential difference maker? Dad went to Rutgers and is not expected at Minnesota this weekend.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 20

http://www.scout.com/player/196176-corey-bolds?s=183

Paramus (N.J.) Catholic defensive tackle Corey Bolds saw a good time during last weeks' official visit. Rutgers did not push hard whatsoever during the visit and, speaking of visits, Bolds will also be at Minnesota this weekend.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 20

http://www.scout.com/player/214409-ifeanyi-maijeh?s=183

Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep defensive lineman Ifeanyi Maijeh took an under-the-radar official visit to Rutgers the same weekend as most committed prospects. Rutgers remains in contact with interest in another defensive tackle before National Signing Day. Temple was in to see Maijeh, a New Hampshire commit, this week.

Official Visit Date: Dec. 9

http://www.scout.com/college/rutgers/player/209800-axel-nyembwe

Duke commit Axel Nyembwe unofficially visited Rutgers Friday with his family, and hosted Ash in his home Sunday night. Headed to an all-star week Tuesday, visits are over for Nyembwe but a final decision could rag into National Signing Day.

Official Visit Date: Dec. 2

Linebacker Battles...

http://www.scout.com/player/206076-olakunle-fatukasi?s=183

The fact that Rutgers commit Olakunle Fatukasi left Indiana with the Scarlet Knights on top was a good sign for Ash. The same goes for a Temple visit, where Fatukasi left committed to Rutgers. With that said, two January visits for a committed prospect should never inspire too complete confidence after what happened last year with Taysir Mack. The best news? Fatuksasi is expected on the Rutgers campus this weekend to help recruit.

Official Visit Date: Dec. 9

http://www.scout.com/player/207350-syhiem-simmons?s=183

Syhiem Simmons is happy to express his high interest in Rutgers but won't be a commitment without an official visit. Simmons' official visit moved back one week, and it depends on how aggressively Rutgers pursues him. Ash discussed a coverage linebacker and nickel defensive back role with him during an in-home, and an on-campus moment with his dad this weekend ends his recruitment if it is up to Simmons.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 27

The Defensive Secondary...

http://www.scout.com/player/211003-ihmir-marsette?s=183

Former Rutgers commit Ihmir Marsette trends strongly toward a Big Ten school, but not one close to home. Ash made it to Marsette's home Wednesday night but Iowa and Minnesota have more of his attention.

Official Visit Date: Dec. 9

http://www.scout.com/player/206171-bryce-watts?s=183

Bryce Watts committed to Virginia Tech, and the Hokies have a ton of steam in their 2017 recruiting class. While nothing is formally over until National Signing Day, Virginia Tech is in great position.

Official Visit Date: Dec. 9

http://www.scout.com/player/204701-trey-creamer?s=183

New Minnesota coach PJ Fleck wants to keep Georgia cornerback Trey Creamer on board but he has competition. Rutgers gets Creamer on campus this weekend just like Iowa prior to that. Perhaps new cornerbacks coach Henry Baker, who officially joined the staff Thursday, connects closely with Rutgers in need of help at the position..

Official Visit Date: Jan. 27

Offensive Skill...

http://www.scout.com/player/196631-eddie-lewis?s=183

Rutgers and wide receiver Eddie Lewis “came to an agreement” during a weekend official. While the details of that agreement remain undetermined, Lewis told Scout he expects to call Rutgers his home.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 20

http://www.scout.com/player/207901-brandon-brown?s=183

With the interest shifting to slot receiver for Brandon Brown and Rutgers, there could be other options closer to home. As of Thursday, Brown is not expected on campus after earlier official visits to Central Michigan, Buffalo and Boston College.

Official Visit Date: None

http://www.scout.com/player/209292-raheem-blackshear?s=183

Former Temple commit Raheem Blackshear is a Michigan State Spartan after he officially visited East Lansing. Blackshear sees himself as a slot receiver for Mark Dantonio, while Rutgers wants him as a running back. MSU has a no-visit rule for commits, while Blackshear told Scarlet Report he did not officially rule one out to Rutgers.

Official Visit Date: Undetermined

http://www.scout.com/player/209894-brendan-devera?s=183

Talk about a feel-good story for one of New Jersey's best players at the high school level. Wayne (N.J.) Hills quarterback and linebacker Brendan DeVera will be an H-back for Rutgers football. DeVera flipped from Delaware 12 hours after offensive coordinator Jerry Kill gave him the offer he craved.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 27

http://www.scout.com/player/195439-terence-dunlap?s=183

Alabama running back Terence Dunlap was one of the first in contact when Rutgers struggled at the position with Lovett and Jonathan Taylor. Dunlap's head coach told Scarlet Report that he expects his star running back to visit home-state Troy before any final decision but there are other options also on the table for Rutgers.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 21

http://www.scout.com/player/197895-cordarrian-richardson?s=183

Any conversation that includes four-star running back Cordarrian Richardson and Rutgers should be considered an upward trend. Richardson, whose teammate Mason committed to Rutgers this week, also met with the coaching staff during Tuesday's visit to Memphis (Tenn.) Trezevant High. Get the former Clemson commit on campus and who knows what could happen?

Official Visit Date: Jan. 27

http://www.scout.com/player/213505-travis-vokolek?s=183

Rutgers has a ton of ties to tight end Travis Vokolek. Vokolek got to know offensive coordintor Jerry Kill during the last year with Kansas State. Tight end coach Vince Okruch visited him last week to lock in a visit, and Vokolek's father has a ton of respect for Ash as a long-time college coach himself. Combine that with Rutgers as a leader after an official visit and good news is a safe expectation.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 21

http://www.scout.com/player/214454-ryan-anderson?s=183

Vince Okruch's plan, based on what punter recruits told Scarlet Report, was to bring in the player he intended to offer at the position. Anderson, a graduate transfer originally from DeWitt (Mich.) set his visit and has every intention of picking Rutgers should the scholarship arrive.

Official Visit Date: Jan. 27
