Tuesday Practice Report: Ahmir Mitchell Out with Torn ACL

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Scarlet Report has the latest on Ahmir Mitchell's injury status and more after Tuesday's Rutgers football practice.

The Headline – An MRI for Ahmir Mitchell's Saturday injury revealed a torn ACL for the red-shirt freshman wide receiver. While the news is a blow to one of Rutgers' most-competitive young players, head coach Chris Ash expects him back this season, the program said.

Mitchell injured his knee Saturday during a special teams portion of the scrimmage and is bound for surgery.

With Janarion Grant (leg) and Jawuan Harris (baseball) seriously limited in spring and Dacoven Bailey in a non-contact jersey after Saturday's scrimmage, Mitchell's injury gives opportunities to new names at the position.

Rutgers awaits the arrival of a new wave of receivers in training camp. For the rest of spring, Damon Mitchell is the expected top receiver with Rashad Blunt and Mohamed Jabbie in line for more reps.

Worth Noting – Fresh off his debut on a Rutgers two-deep, red-shirt freshman Elorm Lumor wants to make an impact in spring practice.

“I understand how to stay patient,” Lumor said. “When I first got here, I wasn't as patient. Now I'm learning to wait for things on the field to come to me.”

Quote of the Day – “I don't want to dwell on the past. I want to worry about this year. I want to worry about right now. I'm healthy. I got stronger. I'm a senior and players are looking at me this year and willing to follow up. When I strap on this helmet and go hard, they're going hard. I just want to be a leader on the field and do the same thing like I did in 2014, bring back in time and show it right now in the present." -- Kemoko Turay.
