On the Recruiting Trail

Guessing at the verbals

I really expected that we'd have another verbal by now. There was a rumor last week that South Jersey running back Shonn Green was about to verbal. That was not true and, in fact, expect Green to head out of state. Don't get disillusioned by that. Contrary to reports recruiting is going fine. My guess is that Schiano is being picky with just a limited amount of 'ships to give. Right now (if I had to guess) I would guess that the most likely targets for a verbal are Chris Rutledge (6-7, 256, 4.9, OL), Corey Hyman (6-4, 290, 5.0, OL) or Jean Beljour (6-0, 195, 4.45, RB). However all of those guys have said that they want to take their time and think it over  ... so, who knows. On the other hand, I have heard rumors of a surprise in the offing ... so, stay tuned.

Rutgers is close to offering Plainfield's Rob Crudup (6-3, 300, 5.2, OL) who incidentally is the best friend of junior Eugene Monroe, (6-7, 320, 5.3,OL). Monroe will be the most highly recruited player in the state next year. Big Dog saw him at camp and said that Monroe's agility is astonishing.

Finally, Phil Trautwein (6-6, 285, 5.3, OL) has over 20 offers now. He has narrowed down the list to three, one of which is RU.

Getting what you wish for

One guy you don't have to worry about is Pennsylvania speedster Richie Schiccatano (5-10, 175, 4.37, RB, WR, CB, K). Richie loves the Knights. Last week he told me that he'd come to Rutgers in a heartbeat. Up till now, though, Richie was just hoping that Rutgers would start to recruit him. Well, this week that wish came true. The call from the staff that he had been waiting for finally came. Schiccatano might have got the coaching staff's attention with back to back 150 yard plus total offense games. That's not hard to do if you run a legit 4.37, which Richie does.

Other schools recruiting him include Penn State, Illinois, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Maryland. All those schools have asked for his transcripts which is generally a sign that they the schools are seriously considering an offer.

However, they better not wait too long. Because if Rutgers offers ... Richie is Scarlet.
