Rutgers Quarterback Search Takes New Shape in Spring Evaluation

Scarlet Report takes a look at the Rutgers quarterback board and upcoming visitors to campus in the 2018 recruiting class, including unique timing that works to the Scarlet Knights' benefit.

Rutgers projects to go out of state and out of the region for its 2018 quarterback recruit. Approximately halfway through the spring evaluation period, Rutgers has three new offers out to 2018 recruits with all of them prepared for visits to campus.

Visit Date: May 12

Received Offer: May 4

The 6-foot, 181-pound Jalen Chatman will be on campus this weekend as the first unofficial visitor of the cycle. Chatman is California's 11th best passer after 3,926 passing yards and 52 touchdowns as a junior. Chatman can run but does not have the same size as other Rutgers quarterback targets.

Rutgers is a top option for Chatman, whose other schools in consideration are Tulane, UC Davis, Montana State and Southern Utan.

Visit Date: May 12 or May 19

Received Offer: May 10

An athletic South Carolina gunslinger, the key with Tyshun Sarratt is the ideal May 22 commitment day – his birthday. Will Rutgers be ready to take a quarterback before all three targets visit campus? Will Chatman go through this weekend's visit uncommitted?

While Sarratt is the newest offer, the relationship dates back to Scotty Ohara's arrival on staff. Offensive coordinator Jerry Kill recommended Ohara for quality control after time together at Kansas State. Sarratt has been in touch ever since, and called Rutgers the offer he wanted most.

Sarratt has primarily Ivy League interest. Sarratt led his team with 2,307 yards, 22 touchdowns and 60 percent on his completions as a junior.

Visit Date: June 2

Received Offer: May 3

Quarterback Sean Chambers wanted to visit earlier but cross-country travel is never easy. As the 6-foot-4, 205-pound passer explained to coach Chris Ash, he made other weekend commitments before the Rutgers offer. Chambers plays first base on his high-school team this weekend, and already registered for The Opening Oakland the following weekend (Scout will be in attendance).

Chambers may be the least polished of the three targets, but he has the ideal measurables and skillset for the Rutgers scheme. Physically, he compares closest to incoming freshman Johnathan Lewis. Being third on the visit schedule creates intrigue, and so does his targeted date. The first Rutgers skills camp of June takes place on the third. Will Chambers camp?
