Rutgers adds Massachusetts as its home opener for the 2019 season, announced today as an Aug. 31 kickoff from High Point Solutions Stadium.
Massachusetts joins Liberty (Oct. 26) and Boston College (Sept. 21) on the 2019 non-conference schedule.
The Minutemen are 7-25 since Mark Whipple's return as coach. Former Rutgers assistant Ed Pinkham joined Whipple's staff as defensive coordinator this season. Familiar players with 2019 eligibility include wide receiver Sadiq Palmer (Red Bank Regional), receiver Elijah Robinson (Montclair) and inebacker Michael Ruane (Rumson-Fair Haven).
The Scarlet Knights played Umass four times from 1967-78 and split the games. Most recently, Rutgers beat Umass 21-11 in Amherts, Mass., during its 9-3 season in 1978.
