Rutgers is back involved with Brooklyn (N.Y.) Erasmus Hall, this time with an offer to 2018 defensive back Shamel Lazarus.
Lazarus showcased his improvements Saturday at the Rutgers skills camp en route to his fifth scholarship offer.
“I was extremely excited about the offer because this is a school that I was getting recruited by since my sophomore year,” said Lazarus, whose offers include Purdue, Connecticut, Kent State and Buffalo. “I wasn't a Division I player back then. This really showed me how far I have come as an athlete.
“I think I showed them that my footwork has improved since the last time they saw me play, which was about three weeks ago. I see myself playing a lot of press corner for them.”
Lazarus comes from the same school as Rutgers junior linebacker Deonte Roberts.
“I haven't spoken to Deonte yet, b ut I hope to get on the phone with him soon to find out how life is as a Scarlet Knight,” Lazarus said. “He's a stud. I can't wait to see how he plays this season.”
Lazarus will return to Rutgers for an in-depth look at the school before he makes a final decision.
“I plan on committing in early August,” he said.
