The college basketball preview magazines for the 2003-04 season have reached the newsstands and several JUCO players from the New York area are mentioned in the preseason player rankings.

A pair of point guards from New Jersey top the local contingent. Jihad Muhammed, a 6-0 native of Plainfield now at San Jacinto (TX), is rated the nation's #1 JUCO point guard by The Sporting News (Rick Ball), #2 by Lindy's Van Coleman) and (Matthew Maurer) and is listed on the second team Super Sophs by Street & Smith's (Tony Jimenez). Travis DeGroot, a 6-3 playmaker from Montclair who sat out last year at New Mexico Military, is ranked #1 by Lindy's, #2 by The Sporting News and #5 by
